Great Denham Parish Council recognised the parish needed to have a focal point for activities within the community and the idea of the Community Hall was born. Since 2007, Great Denham was formally recognised as a Parish, an original 249 houses, gradually being increased to approximately 1300 houses in 2016, the development project will end in the next 2/3 years with 1750 houses and an estimated population of 3,500. In 2011 a consultation for the Community Hall commenced and it was decided the Community Hall would be able to host a diverse range of activities and sessions for the needs of the population of Great Denham and surrounding areas.
Although a relatively new community, the location of the parish of Great Denham has a long and interesting history. Situated in a loop created by the Great River Ouse, archaeological evidence indicates human activity and settlement during the new Stone Age period, some 5,000 years ago. Coins, pottery and other implements found in the area equally confirm a Roman and Saxon presence in the middle of the last millennium. Prized amongst all the archaeological finds was a burial place of a 5,000 year old Bronze Age archer. In the grave with the archer was a near perfect ceramic striking plate (worn on the wrist to protect against damage caused by the bow string). The Community Hall CIO is a registered charity established in April 2016, charity number 1166224. It is run by a committee of up to 14 trustees volunteering their time to give the community a facility to support the needs of the parish. The Trustees oversee the running of the Community Hall. They must ensure that they always act for the good of the charity and that in doing so they comply with the terms of the governing document and any legislation. The Management Committee of the Community Hall comprises representatives from within the parish and from all different backgrounds. Trustees are responsible for maintaining the financial stability of the charity. They must ensure that accurate records are maintained and that they comply with all legal accounting requirements.
The objects of the CIO are to establish and run a village hall and to promote for the benefit of the inhabitants of the Parish of Great Denham (“area of benefit”) without distinction of sex, sexual orientation, age, disability, nationality, race or political, religious or other opinions the provision of facilities for recreation or other leisure time occupation of individuals who have need of such facilities by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disablement, financial hardship or social and economic circumstances or for the public at large in the interests of social welfare and with the object of improving the conditions of life of the said inhabitants..”
